{"id":6949,"date":"2019-11-15T16:56:29","date_gmt":"2019-11-15T16:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/progressiveeconomyforum.com\/development\/?post_type=events&#038;p=6949"},"modified":"2019-11-20T17:06:04","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T17:06:04","slug":"keynes-for-today-a-discussion-with-georgio-la-malfa","status":"publish","type":"events","link":"https:\/\/progressiveeconomyforum.com\/development\/events\/keynes-for-today-a-discussion-with-georgio-la-malfa\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Keynes for Today: A Discussion&#8217; with Giorgio La Malfa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Monday 18th November, PEF and <a href=\"https:\/\/progressiveeconomyforum.com\/development\/author\/lord-skidelsky\/\">Lord Skidelsky<\/a> hosted a discussion with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giorgiolamalfa.it\/\">Giorgio La Malfa<\/a> on &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.giorgiolamalfa.it\/\">Keynes for Today<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historian and economist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giorgiolamalfa.it\/\">Giorgio La Malfa<\/a> (Former Minister of European Affairs and Former Minister of the Budget and Planning, Italy), has recently completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.it\/John-Maynard-Keynes-Giorgio-Malfa-ebook\/dp\/B012DSAB8C\">new Italian translation<\/a> of John Maynard Keynes&#8217; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/gp\/book\/9783319703435\">General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money<\/a><\/em>. This was the main focus of the day&#8217;s discussion, with La Malfa arguing that Keynes&#8217; ideas were needed to save the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Wolf\">Martin Wolf <\/a>(Chief Economics Commentator, <em>Financial Times<\/em>) then gave comment describing Keynes as &#8220;a brave prophet&#8221; who cannot be ignored and emphasising Keynes as a political thinker as well as an economist. Wolf went on to argue that while free trade had done &#8220;enormous good&#8221; that &#8220;capital controls of some kind&#8221; are needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was followed by a lively Q&amp;A session chaired by Lord Skidelsky in which questions were raised on globalisation, the collapse of the Bretton Woods system, the Euro and full employment. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday 18th November, PEF and Lord Skidelsky hosted a discussion with Giorgio La Malfa on &#8216;Keynes for Today&#8216;.
