Progressive Economics 2022

Progressive Economics 2022 was a one-day conference of transformative economic thinking. In a world battered by crises, facing environmental collapse, PEF brought together leading thinkers from across the progressive movement to present the arguments and solutions we need to build a radically better economy.

Thank you to the 500+ attendees who joined us on June 11 for a valuable day of discussion and debate at the University of Greenwich, London.

The Cost of Living on a Dying Planet

A Caring Economy

Our economy doesn’t work for human need, but for profit. Yet it depends critically on care work – from the NHS to social care to parenting, as the pandemic showed. This plenary looks at the crisis in the caring economy, and how we can build an alternative.

Workers and the Crisis

As inflation rises, the mainstream response is to make workers pay – through recession, or through deeper cuts to wages. This session will be about the economic alternative – how workers are winning more rights and building their unions.

What does a Progressive Macroeconomic Policy Look Like?

The mainstream response to the worst inflation in decades has exposed the failures of neoclassical thinking. With central banks and governments seemingly unable to do anything but push up interest rates and hope for a recession, it’s time for a radical rethink of how we manage our economies.

How to End Rentier Capitalism

Capitalism is supposed to produce productive investment and greater wealth for all. But instead we live in economies dominated by rent-seeking and rising inequality. This session will analyse the mechanisms of “rentier capitalism” and the policies needed to end it.

Digital Futures

Covid-19 accelerated the digitisation of our economy, as more and more activity has moved online. But the technologies we have threaten an uncertain future at best: unemployment, huge inequalities of wealth and power, and a lack of democratic oversight. What might we expect, and what are the alternatives?

Why Rising Inequality Matters, and What to do About it

The pandemic saw one of the biggest transfers of wealth in human history – upwards, to the very wealthiest in society. This panel will look at the mechanisms of that transfer, and its consequences, and show ways in which the seemingly endless rise in inequality of wealth can be halted and reversed.

The Age of BlackRock: what asset manager capitalism means for people and planet

The past decade has seen an unprecedented growth in the asset manager industry. Giants like BlackRock now control trillions and trillions of dollars worth of assets. But what does this say about the concentration of wealth and power?  And how should we reimagine ownership to better serve people and planet?

Industrial Strategy, or Industrial Decline?

Government intervention is back in a big way, as countries turn back on years of free market ideology to actively support national industries in an increasingly competitive and unstable world. The session presents the case for an active industrial strategy to meet social and economic goals.

How to End the Cost of Living Crisis

The astonishing rise in prices is already causing misery, and most forecasters expect inflation to worsen. But mainstream “solutions” seem to involve either causing a recession, or cutting wages. Where are price rises coming from, and what are the real solutions to high inflation?

Boris Johnson’s repeated claims to be “levelling up” the country are undermined by the hard facts showing a more geographically unequal economy than ever. This session will look at the practical, radical alternative

Global Justice, Racial Capitalism

The economic crisis is about more than the economies of the Global North. The pandemic, supply disruptions, price rises and now debt are creating appalling conditions in the Global South, even as a tiny handful profit.
